If you need something to get excited about this spring, check out the new Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. It’s Ford’s first fully electric dragster prototype.
The Cobra Jet 1400’s name pays tribute to the original Cobra Jet of the 1960s. With a top speed of over 170 mph, the new model is poised to dominate the eight-second quarter mile. Its electric powertrain is projected to churn out 1,400 horsepower and more than 1,100 lb-ft of torque, pushing the boundaries of what green-energy muscle cars can achieve.
Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Icons, expressed pride in the Cobra Jet 1400’s electric design and stunning capability. He sees the model as an incarnation of how Ford pushes the boundaries of new technology.
According to Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, this model isn’t the only electric race car the brand intends to set loose on the world. “We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package.” He also says that he hopes that the Cobra Jet 1400 is “the first of many” that Ford Performance Motorsports will release in the years ahead.
Per the press release, Ford will officially debut the all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 later this year at a drag racing event. Though we’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn more about this silent and speedy sports car, it promises to live up to the hype.
